James Grimes This is an obsolete technology. As far as I know, nobody's been making them for many years. So, people who have a limited supply can charge as much as they want for them. These things are rare and became popular not so long ago, because they look cool and people love vintage devices.

Anyway, the tubes are pretty expensive now, but the author of the TechMoan YouTube blog has come across an alternative that gets the Nixie look, without any vacuum tubes at all, instead using a stack of edge-lit acrylic sheets for each digit.. Nixie tubes come in a lot of different sizes but I wanted one with a giant digit. If you sort this list by symbol height (not an exhaustive list, but the person running the site seems to have a lot of tubes!), two of the largest ones are the Z568M and the IN-18, both with 50mm digits.
